Rene Burri Photographs.

Photographs by Rene Burri. Text by Hans-Michael Koetzle.
Phaidon, London, 2003. 448 pp., 20 color, 450 duotone illustrations, 9¼x12".

For decades, Burri has been known to photography insiders as a seminal, twentieth-century figure. But many people still ask, "Who is RĂ©ne Burri?" For starters, he is a member of the prestigious Magnum Agency, invited to join in 1959 at the young age of 26. Born and still residing in Switzerland, Burri is most-known for his iconic images of Che Guevara, the young Cuban revolutionary and right-hand man to Castro. But with nearly 50 years of photography and filmmaking under his belt, his project list is extensive. Phaidon intends to remedy our unfamiliarity with his name (if not his work) through their publication of this massive and encompassing career retrospective on Burri's work. Twentyone thematic chapters detail his contributions to our collective understanding of place and personalities from the 20th century. The first international recognition for his work came with the seminal photography book on post-WWII Germany, Die Deutschen (The Germans) in 1962. In this new volume we witness his travels in Europe to the Middle East, Brazil, Cuba, and Indochina, and enter the studios of Picasso, Le Corbusier, and Giacometti as well. Over 400 duotones fill this sumptuous volume, effectively reminding us of the work we have taken for granted for so long.
