Harvey Stein began photographing and interviewing artists with their work in 1980. This selection of 85 of the resulting portraits includes many of the most creative contemporary
artists working in diverse styles and geographic locations, and
at various stages of their careers. The artists include Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Christo, Edward Ruscha, Sandy Skoglund, Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, and Lucas Samaras. The interviews with the artists are compelling, such as a poignant discussion with William Wegman one week after his pet and model/collaborator Man Ray had died.
