Corps Divins. Photographs by Pierre et Gilles.

Corps Divins.

Photographs by Pierre et Gilles.
Editions du Chene, Paris, 2006. 184 pp., black-and-whtie and color illustrations throughout, 9½x11".

Pierre et Gilles' signature imagery, featuring overt sexuality and strong religious themes, is here paired with texts by religious historian Odon Vallet. Traditional religious symbols - the Infant Jesus, Saint Sebastian pierced with arrows, Buddha, the archangel Michael, Krishna - here rub up against more eclectic imagery, like The Lifeguard, Saint Pierre and Saint Gilles, the Little Gardener, and the Little Communist. Most of this work is older, dating from the mid 1980s through the 1990s, but some new images do appear in the book. In French.
