Photographs by Michael Schmidt.
Scalo, Zürich, English, 1996. In Germany. 314 pp., numerous duotone illustrations, 7½x10½".

Michael Schmidt is one of Germany's most contemporary photographers. This book is a collection of images, about half of which are Schmidt's own, and half of which are taken from newspapers and other documents. It is a visual investigation of Germany in the 20th century, from World War I to the re-unification, without text. An extraordinary book, of which MOMA's Peter Galassi says, "[The] pictures are all but incomprehensible on their own, but the carefully sequenced whole is deeply affecting".
