Panoramas of the Far East.

Photographs by Lois Conner.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, 1993. 60 pp., 30 black-and-white illustrations, 8¼x9¾".

Lois Conner has become known for her evocative black-and-white photographs of China, densely detailed and strikingly framed panoramas that have the sweep and balance of oriental screen paintings in miniature. Panoramas of the Far East summarizes Conner's extensive photographing in recent years of China, Burma, Thailand, Nepal, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. Elongated views of gardens, yards, urban scenes, people, architecture, parks, fields, steep buttes, and low-lying ancient ruins on empty plateaus reveal an interplay between ancient cultures and industrialization, offering scenes of modern technology interspersed with centuries-old rural landscapes.
