Born, Chattanooga, TN

1968
|
Purchased first 35 mm camera to document projects in architecture school. Quickly realized a more serious interest.
|
|
|
1970
|
Received Bachelor of Architecture degree and immediately began formal training in photography.
|
|
|
1971
|
VISTA volunteer assigned to the Architect’s Workshop in Pittsburgh. Photographed extensively and initiated a photography class for teens at the YMCA.
|
|
|
1972
|
Began graduate studies at East Tennessee State University. Influenced by many photographers, but especially Minor White and Robert Frank.
|
|
|
1975
|
Served as Adjunct Instructor at the University of Delaware while completing the MFA degree, which afforded the opportunity to frequent east coast galleries and museums.
|
|
|
1976
|
Appointed to faculty at Louisiana Tech University.
|
|
|
1978
|
Experimented with a series of infrared images that stressed a sense of mystery. Later realized this quality could be even more poignant using conventional materials. Eugene Atget, the painter Giorgio de Chirico and Sultan/Mandel’s book Evidence were important influences.

|
1979
|
Began work on “The Portable Sign Series” using improvised props in the photographs.
|
|
|
1982
|
Awarded NEA Visual Artist Fellowship Grant for work from “The Portable Sign Series.”
|
|
|
1983
|
Used grant money to return to the east coast for five months in order to photograph the urban environment and to frequent galleries and museums again. Began a series of images that suggest the aftermath of a nuclear disaster.
|
|
|
1984
|
Traveled in the mid-west and continued work on the nuclear aftermath photographs, which would be titled “Living Things” in the mockup for a book that was exhibited but never published.
|
|
|
1985
|
Appointed to faculty at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
|
|
|
1986
|
Began a body of work titled “Obstacles: Environmental Impediments to Blind People.” Exhibition traveled regionally and later nationally.
|
|
|
1990
|
Began using 35 mm and 3200 speed film to photograph interiors and other difficult lighting situations. From these experiments evolved the work that became The Watchman’s Room. Also began studies of creative writing, which was a major influence on the photographs.
|
|
|
1998
|
Began work on a new book project—night photographs in small towns.
|
|
|
2002
|
The Watchman's Room published.
