Born, Abington, PA, USA
1972
Realization that liberal arts wasn't for me. Introduction to photography by my best friend Mark Daniels.
1973
Transferred from Gettysburg College to the University of the Arts where I studied under Ray Metzker.
1976
Accidently moved across the street from my hero, Emmet Gowin.
1978
While starving as a bartender,I met a former student of Walker Evans who sold me his 8x10 Deardorff. It changed my life.
1990
Got stabbed in the back in a tenure application at Moore College of Art and Design. Gave up teaching and started shooting for magazines. It was like getting a grant to travel and shoot with each job.
1998
Taught at Sarah Lawrence College for Joel Sternfeld. It reintroduced me to teaching in a good way.
1999
Took a teaching position at The University of the Arts. It got me off the road, which is both good and bad. I see my family more, but I'm shooting less.....
2001
Published "Taking Liberties". A new book that was done almost completely on my own. I think controlling my own destiny is the way to go.
2003
Published "Declaring Independence"… I'm always thinking that I have finished this body of work. In reality, this book is the second half of "Taking Liberties".
2008
Published "Almost Paradise". This book is meant to have a narrative that overlays the entire sequence of photographs. It is available to the careful viewer.
2014
Brilliantly, Martin McNamara of Gallery 339 came up with the idea of linking my 35 years of devotion to my photographing the American cultural landscape together in a show "Thirty-Five Years / 35 Pictures". Very hard to make choices, but the show looks great.
