Peter Merts:
Solitude
Portfolio Introduction
This project, which is ongoing, provides me an opportunity to explore solitude. What have I discovered so far?
That solitude is an unsettled land, and sometimes unsettling -- a land of fugitive light, fecund darkness, and provocative incongruity. In solitude there is freedom to change perspective, and room to reflect ā or to notice reflections. In solitude, Iām drawn down narrowing paths, into clouds of dense unknowing, toward rendezvous undreamt. In this realm of unmapped metaphors I stumble into things ā into sudden beauty, subtle terror, and the odd stabbing insight.
I see solitude as a stream of consciousness flowing through an unpeopled landscape. These photographs were made from the eddies of one such turbid current.
